Pioneers Defeat Mavs 6-3 in Denver Cup Final

Denver, CO---The Mavericks' bid for a second holiday tournament championship in four years fell short Sunday night as Denver University skated past Nebraska-Omaha 6-3 in the final of the Denver Cup.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the opening period on goals by Ryan Helgason, Gabe Gauthier and Kevin Ulanski. Helgason's goal came on a rebound in front of the net at 2:53 and Gauthier's tally came on the power play at 6:22. Ulanski scored at the 9:55 mark.
UNO made the score 3-1 at 14:26 of the first period when Mike Lefley tallied his seventh goal of the season. Lefley took a pass from Gabinet on the left wing and flipped a wrist shot past Denver goaltender Adam Berkhoel from inside the left circle.
The Mavs then made it a 3-2 game three minutes later when Phil Angel scored his second goal of the weekend on the power play. Mike Gabinet fed Angell on a pass from behind the net and Angel fired a shot from the right faceoff circle.
Denver extended its lead to 5-2 in the second period on a power play goal by Lukas Dora at 13:51 and a goal by Max Bull 33 seconds later. Dora's goal came with one second remaining on the power play. Bull's tally was a one-timer from the slot.
The Mavericks cut the lead to 5-3 when Brent Kisio knocked in a rebound on the power play at 16:51 of the second period.
DU scored its final goal of the night when Luke Fulghum scored 1:41 into the third period.
UNO senior goaltender Brian Haaland made 36 saves in the losing effort.
Maverick freshman Phil Angell was named to the Denver Cup All-Tournament team after scoring a goal each night.
UNO (5-12-3, 3-9-2) is off next week and will resume CCHA play on January 7-8 when they host Ferris State.
