Mavs Fall to Northern Colorado, 75-63

PUEBLO, COLO. -- Northern Colorado shot 53 percent from the field to overcome a first half lead by the Mavericks in posting a 75-63 win Friday afternoon in the Chuck Stephens Classic UNO will meet host Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday night at 7 (CST) in the second game of the tournament.
UNO (2-4) used a 15-2 run early in the game to take a 15-8 lead. The Mavericks built the advantage to 22-11 before the Bears went on a 14-3 run and then claimed a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Northern Colorado's 8-0 run to open the second half put the Bears into a comfortable lead and UNO, shooting just 37 percent the second half, could pull no closer. The Bears (5-2)hit all 10 of their free throws in the final three minutes to seal the win.
Lindsey Petersen connected for 17 points and JJ Smith for 13 to lead the Mavericks. Chelsie Groslie added six assists, six points and a game-tying-high eight rebounds. Petersen left the game with a sprained ankle in the second half and is doubtful for Saturday's contest.
Amber Elliott scored 20 points and Heather Barbour added 19 to lead the Bears.
