UNO Opens 2003 Season in Florida

The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team will open the 2003 campaign this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30-31, when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to compete in the Lynn Labor Day Classic. The Mavericks will be unfamiliar with their tournament opponents, as all four pool-play matches will mark the first-ever meeting between the respective schools.
On Saturday, Aug. 30, the Mavericks will face Indianapolis at 8 a.m. and Carson Newman at 12 p.m. Nebraska-Omaha will battle Glenville State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, followed by a 12 p.m. clash with tournament host Lynn. At the conclusion of that match, teams will be seeded into a single-elimination tournament.
The 2003 version of the UNO Mavericks will feature the return of five starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's 14-17 squad.
The Record
Nebraska-Omaha finished the 2002 season with a 14-17 overall record and a 4-12 mark in the North Central Conference, good for eighth place. After starting the season by winning seven of their first eight matches and 12 of their first 15, the Mavericks could manage just three wins in their final 16 matches.
The 2002 season was highlighted by three wins over ranked opponents, including two wins over No. 24-ranked Augustana and a victory over 15th-ranked North Dakota State to open the conference season.
NCC Preseason Poll
The 2003 University of Nebraska at Omaha Maverick volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the North Central Conference volleyball coaches poll relased on Aug. 19. The Mavericks finished in eighth place in the final 2002 conference standings with a 4-12 NCC record.
Minnesota State, Mankato has been picked by league coaches as the favorite to capture the North Central Conference championship. Minnesota State captured six of the eight first-place votes with North Dakota State and South Dakota State gaining the other two top votes.
Teams begin play on the weekend of August 28 with conference play opening
on September 23.
