UNO Finishes Second at Lynn Labor Day Classic

Boca Raton, Fla. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team (4-2) finished second at the Lynn University Labor Day Classic on Sunday, August 31 by going 3-1 in the final day of competition, including a four-game semifinal win over Indianapolis, who defeated the Mavericks in the season opener. The Mavericks were defeated by West Florida in five games in the championship match.
The Mavericks had no trouble in the first match of the day, sweeping Glenville State 30-10, 30-18, 30-7, allowing the fewest points (35) in school history in the rally scoring "30-point game" era. The Mavericks, who outhit GSU .439 to -.020, were led by junior Andrea Wegner's 8 kills and .545 hitting percentage (8k-2e-11a).
UNO defeated host Lynn University, 3-1 (30-19, 24-30, 30-23, 30-27) in the final pool play match of the tournament to advance to the four-team championship bracket. Junior outside hitter Amy Sibbernsen (Omaha, Neb.) led the Mavericks with a season-high 24 kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Jenny Rankin (North Platte, Neb.) added 11 kills and a team-leading 17 digs and five service aces. Senior setter Kylie Lebeda (Omaha, Neb.) contributed with 47 assists, four kills, and five digs.
In the tournament's first semifinal match, the Mavericks avenged their season-opening loss to Indianapolis by turning back the Greyhounds, 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-23, 30-28). Once again, Sibbernsen led the Maverick attack with a sizzling .452 attack percentage on 23 kills, four errors, and 42 attemps. Sibbernsen added 10 digs and three service aces. Three other Mavericks recorded double figures kills, including junior Katie Blacketer (14), sophomore Chelsea Miller (11), and junior Alyssa Matthes (11). Blacketer hit a team-leading .500 (14k-3e-22a) in the match.
In the championship match, West Florida battled back from a 2-1 deficit to pull out a 30-26, 20-30, 23-30, 30-21, 15-6 over UNO to finish the tournament unbeaten at 6-0. Sibbernsen led the UNO offense with 23 kills, while adding 11 digs and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Julia McConahay (North Platte, Neb.) added a season-high 11 kills, 15 digs, and two service aces. Jenny Rankin was the third Maverick to record a double-double in the match with 10 kills and 11 digs.
