Sibbernsen Joins 2003 Volleyball Squad

Former Omaha Marian High School all-stater Amy Sibbernsen will join the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball squad for the 2003 season, head coach Rose Shires announced today. Sibbersen, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, played one season at Michigan State (2000) and one season at Nebraska (2001), before sitting out last season.
Sibbernsen, who helped Nebraska to the 2001 NCAA Final Four, played in 44 games for the Huskers, recording 11 service aces and 20 digs on the season.
"Amy is obviously an excellent addition to our team," said Shires. "She is an extremely accomplished volleyball player who is a proven winner. Amy will immediately raise the level of play on our team. I think what Amy is truly going to add to our team is maturity and on-court volleyball intelligence."
At Michigan State, Sibbernsen started the Spartans' first 19 matches before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined her for eight matches. She ranked third on the team in digs (2.51 per game), fourth in service aces (15) and fifth in kills (2.51 per game). Sibbernsen posted a career-best 19 kills on 33 attacks with a .485 hitting percentage against Northeastern on Sept. 2, and she totaled a career-high 17 digs against Michigan Sept. 20. Sibbernsen notched seven double-doubles and recorded double-figure kills totals in 10 matches and double-figure dig totals 11 times.
A 1999 Volleyball Magazine High School All-American, Sibbernsen led Marian High School to a 44-1 record and the 1999 Class A state championship. Sibbernsen was a two-time first-team Omaha World-Herald all-state selection and a two-time Lincoln Journal Star Super-State honoree. Sibbernsen played club ball for Gwen Egbert on the Nebraska Juniors 18-and-under team after playing for the River Cities volleyball club for three years. A four-year letterwinner in volleyball and track and a three-year letterwinner in basketball, Sibbernsen was a finalist for the Nebraska Women's Athlete-of-the-Year award. She was a member of the 3,200-meter relay team that set the Nebraska state record and won three Class A titles at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships.
"Her experience at the highest level of collegiate volleyball will more than make up for the fact that Amy has been away from the game for the past year," said Shires. "I have no doubt in my mind, nor does Amy, that by the end of the preseason, she will be at the top of her game."
