Unbeaten Mavs Stay on the Road for Two More

The University of Nebraska-Omaha women's soccer team will finish a five-game road trip this weekend when they face unranked Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist. The Mavs and Lady Lions will kickoff Friday at 7 p.m. for the first of two night games on the schedule, then on Sunday they will face Southwest Baptist for the first time ever.
UNO (4-0-0), ranked No. 2 now for the third week in a row, will bring a defense that has yet to give up a goal and an offense that came together last weekend with twelve goals. Freshman Haley Fries broke through last Sunday for her first collegiate goals and now leads the team with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists). Four other players, Ashley Grace, Tricia Braziel, Stephanie Kirby and Jaime Venhaus, each have three goals.
About the Lions and Bearcats
The Missouri Southern Lady Lions began the season at 1-1 under first-year coach Trevor Wachsman. Goalkeeper Kim Boessen made 12 saves and gave up 6 goals in their two games and the two highest scorers, Tera Reisner and Kaysie Griffin each have five points. The Lady Lions will play at Rockhurst on Wednesday before their matchup with UNO on Friday. The Mavs hold a 3-0 advantage in the series record. Southwest Baptist, 1-2 on the year, returns sophomore Vanessa Toll, last year's leading scorer with 18 points (5 goals, 8 assists) and goalkeeper Sara Eppler, who gave up 1.88 goals in ten games last year. Head Coach Peter McGovern will lead the Lady Bearcats into their first match against the Mavs.
Mavs second in the nation
UNO made its tenth-straight appearance in the NSCAA/adidas national poll's top five in last Tuesday's ranking. That also marked the third week they held the No. 2 spot. Two wins last weekend, including one against No. 14 Truman State, should keep the Mavs put when this week's poll is released Tuesday. Top-ranked Christian Brothers and No. 3 Northern Kentucky met each other last Friday and played to a 1-1 tie in Nashville, Tenn. CBU outshot the Norse 28-8 but couldn't score until it was awarded a penalty kick in the 78th minute to secure the tie and, possibly, its top ranking. NKU then played Tusculum College Sunday and fell 2-1, suffering its first regular season loss in 22 games. The rest of the top-five won their games to remain unbeaten.
Kirby chases assists record
Senior Stephanie Kirby scored 12 assists last year, a team best and one away from a Mav season record, for a career total of 26, tying a Mav record set by Katie Hobbs in 2001. Her first assist this year will break the record. Kirby added seven goals last year for 26 points and finished third in team scoring.
Mavs tough to outshoot
Truman State managed nine shots to the Mavs seven last Saturday in a rare outshooting performance- the first in the last two seasons. The last time the Mavs (3-0-0) were outshot was Nov. 3, 2001, in the opening round of the North Central Conference tournament against Northern Colorado. UNC edged UNO 23-14 on shots but the Mavs put one in for the 1-0 win.
Two Mavs net hat tricks
Freshman Haley Fries and senior Stephanie Kirby each picked up hat tricks last Sunday as the Mavs blanked Central Missouri State 10-0 in the final game of the CMSU Classic. Fries picked up her first collegiate goals and Kirby notched her firsts of the season and first career hat trick, also the first for UNO since Oct. 27, 2001, when Brandy McSorley scored three against Northwest Missouri State.
