Second-Half Comeback Lifts Mavs to Win

Levy Jones' four free throws in the final minute helped the Mavericks seal a 75-73 non-conference win over Morningside Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse. Jones finished the game with a season-high 12 points. Tola Dada led UNO with 15 points and Zac Robinson added 14.
The Mavericks, now 9-3, trailed the Mustangs 40-36 at halftime before surging to an 11-point lead with 8:38 to play in the second half. Morningside then scored six straight points and whittled the margin down to 70-68 with 27 seconds to play.
Jones connected on four straight from the line, sandwiched around a Brad Schmit layup to give UNO a 74-70 lead with 20 seconds to play.
Schmit hit a long three-pointer with seven seconds left to pull the Mustangs within a point, 74-73, but Dada hit one of two free shots with 5.3 seconds left and the Mustangs failed to get off a last shot.
The Mustangs shot 53 percent from the field and led by as many as nine points the first half, but cooled down to shoot just 37 percent the second half and 46 percent for the game. Schmit led Morningside with 19 points, while Paul McGill and Eddie Ceaser each scored 14.
The Mavericks, who shot 49 percent from the field for the game, outrebounded the Mustangs 36-28, led by Dada's nine.
UNO's next action will come in the North Central Conference opener Friday, Jan. 9 at Augustana.
