USD Holds Off Maverick Rush, 77-63

VERMILLION, S.D. -- No. 15 South Dakota fought off a late Maverick rush and rode Mandy Koupal's 34-point, 19-rebound performance to post a 77-63 North Central Conference victory at the DakotaDome Saturday night. The Mavs, 4-15 and 0-7, battled from behind to trail the Coyotes by 66-62 with less than two minutes to play before USD converted its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
UNO and South Dakota will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. Sara Myers, with a career-best 18 points, and Lindsey Petersen, with 15, led the Mavericks, while Leslie Ross added 11 points and six rebounds.
"I think that the intensity and enthusiasm our players showed tonight was refreshing," Maverick Coach Lisa Carlsen said.
UNO grabbed a 16-14 lead midway through the first half on a jumper by LaCheryl Prince, but the Coyotes responded with an 8-0 run and parlayed that into a 39-32 halftime lead.
The Mavericks sliced the margin to a single point, using an early 7-0 run in the second half, but could never grab the lead. UNO held the Coyotes to just 29 percent from the floor the second half, but USD still built the lead to 64-55 swith 3:39 left. Nevertheless, the Mavericks refused to wilt.
Myers hit a pair of free throws and Petersen nailed a three-pointer before Shannon Eggers scored inside to bring the Mavs to within four, 66-62 with 2:11 remaining.
But the Coyotes' Kayla Jacobs hit a timely three-pointer to snuff the rally and the Coyotes hit all eight of their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
