UNO Rallies To Upset 17th-Ranked Augustana

Omaha, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team used career performances by senior Amy McLeay and freshman Carlie Christensen to upset 17th ranked Augustana 3-2 (30-22, 25-30, 28-30, 30-22, 15-13) Friday night before 628 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse in the Mavericks' home opener. With the win, UNO improved to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the North Central Conference. Augustana fell to 11-6 and 2-2.
McLeay blasted a career-high 25 kills and added 13 digs for her team-leading ninth double-double on the season. Christensen also recorded a career-high in kills with 18 while hitting .500 on the night (18k-2e-32a). Christensen and junior Ashley Freeman blocked the Vikings' Kara Johnson on match point to secure the victory for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks rallied in the fifth game, trailing by scores of 8-2, 10-4, and 13-10, before reeling off five straight points to pull out the upset. A kill by Christensen, a solo block by McLeay, two Viking attack errors, and the Christensen-Freeman block accounted for the final five points of the match.
Junior Chelsea Miller led the Mavericks defensively with 26 digs. Senior Julia McConahay added 15 digs to join McLeay and Miller as the three Mavericks with double-figure dig totals.
The Mavericks outhit Augustana .224 to .145 and held a 77 to 58 advantage in kills. Both teams tallied five service aces and the Vikings held a slight advantage in digs at 79 to 74.
UNO will continue their homestand tomorrow night, Saturday, Oct. 2 when they play host to Minnesota State, Mankato, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
