No. 24 Mavericks Host North Dakota on Saturday

The No. 23-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team (12-6/3-2), currently in third place in the NCC standings, will play host to North Dakota (8-11/0-6) on Saturday, Oct. 16 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks defeated North Dakota (3-1) on Sep. 24 in Grand Forks in the NCC opener for both teams. For complete ticket information on all UNO home matches, please call 1-402-554-MAVS.
The Record:
The Mavericks are currently 12-6 on the season and 3-2 in the NCC after dropping a pair of matches last week, including a three-game non-conference home loss to No. 1-ranked Nebraska-Kearney and a five-game loss at South Dakota. The Mavericks, who are 7-2 against North Central Region opponents, are tied for 3rd in the latest NCAA II North Central Region rankings. UNO is currently ranked No. 23 in the most recent CSTV/AVCA top 25 poll.
Maverick Magazine:

Girl Scout Night:
Saturday's match against North Dakota has been designated as Girl Scout Night with the Mavericks. Between the second and third games, eight $25 camperships will be given away compliments of Arby's, Cox Communications, Omaha Softball Association, and the South Omaha Optimists. In addition, two skating parties, compliments of Skateland, will be given away to the winners of the banner and cheer contest.

Top-Ranked Lopers Sweep No. 23 Mavericks:
Omaha, Neb. -- No. 1-ranked Nebraska-Kearney extended its winning streak to 20 matches by sweeping the 23rd-ranked UNO Mavericks 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-22) before a season-high 1,284 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night. The Lopers improved to 20-0 with the victory while UNO dropped to 12-5.
The Mavericks were led by senior outside hitter Amy McLeay who registered a match-high 15 kills, along with eight digs, and three blocks. Freshman middle blocker Carlie Christensen added nine kills and four blocks. Junior setter Christie Johnson dished out a match-high 44 assists. The Mavericks were led defensively by junior Chelsea Miller's 12 digs.
Nebraska-Omaha was plagued by 33 hitting errors in the match, compared to just eight for the Lopers. UNK outhit the Mavericks .281 to .114. The Mavericks did hold a 56 to 45 advantage in digs, but were outblocked 18 to 10.
Nebraska-Kearney, which has only been extended past three games once this season, was led by junior All-American Erin Gudmundson, who tallied 12 kills and five blocks, while hitting .360 on the night. Erin Arnold added nine kills and 13 digs in the Loper victory.
South Dakota Rallies To Upset Mavericks in Five Games:
Vermillion, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota overcame a 2-0 deficit in games to defeat the 23rd-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks 27-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-24, 15-11 on Saturday, Oct. 9, before a crowd of 157 at the DakotaDome.
The Mavericks (12-6, 3-2 NCC) were led by freshman Carlie Christensen who belted 17 kills and hit .359 with only three errors in 39 attempts. She also added a match-high three service aces. Junior setter Christie Johnson recorded a double-double with 65 assists and 16 digs. She also added a career-high seven kills while hitting .500 with no errors in 14 attempts, and registered two service aces.
Joining Christensen in double-digits for kills were four other Mavericks including Amy McLeay (16), Ashley Freeman (14), Jenny Rankin (11), and Briana Ritter (10). Nebraska-Omaha held a 79 to 68 advantage in kills and outhit the Coyotes .205 to .203 in the match.
Defensively, the Mavericks recorded a season-high 120 digs with three Mavericks tallying over 20 digs. Sophomore Stacie Wemhoff recorded a career-high 23 digs, while junior Chelsea Miller added 22 and senior Julia McConahay had 21.
The Coyotes (11-9, 3-1 NCC) were led by Kristen Miller who had a match-high 19 kills and 22 digs and Lindsey Soukup who registered 16 kills and a match-high 30 digs.
Shires Earns 300th Career Victory:
Rose Shires picked up her 300th career victory when the Mavericks swept Hillsdale 3-0 (30-17, 31-29, 30-25) on Aug. 28 at the North Alabama Classic. Shires has amassed a 308-170 (. 644) career record in her 15th season as the Mavericks' mentor. Shires, the 1996 AVCA Division II national coach of the year, is the second winningest coach in the school's history behind Janice Kruger who recorded a 352-96 mark in her nine Maverick seasons from 1979-87.
Rankin Joins 1,000-Kill Club:
With her third kill in the Mavericks' 3-0 sweep over Minnesota State on Oct. 2, outside hitter Jenny Rankin became just the 15th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. Rankin, a senior from North Platte, Neb., has now registered 1,022 kills in her four-year Maverick career.
