Mavs Host NCC Leader USD in Key Matchup

The No. 24-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team (14-7/5-3), currently in third place in the NCC standings, will play host to NCC leader South Dakota (14-10/6-1) at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Record:
The Mavericks are currently 14-7 on the season and 5-3 in the NCC after splitting a pair of matches last week against ranked opponents, including a four-game home victory over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth and a five-game loss at Augustana. The Mavericks, who are 9-3 against North Central Region opponents, are 5th in the latest NCAA II North Central Region rankings. UNO is ranked No. 24 in the most recent CSTV/AVCA top 25 poll.

Mavericks Upset No. 6-Ranked Minnesota Duluth:
OMAHA, Neb. -- Five Mavericks recorded double-figures in kills as the Univesity of Nebraska at Omaha upset No. 6-ranked Minnesota-Duluth 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 30-28, 30-27) in North Central Conference volleyball action Friday night before 891 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks handed UMD their first conference loss, dropping the Bulldogs to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the NCC. UNO improved to 14-6 and 5-2.
Nebraska-Omaha was led by the 22-kill, 21-dig performance of senior outside hitter Amy McLeay. Junior setter Christie Johnson distributed a very balanced offense, finishing the match with 60 assists, nine digs, five blocks, and four kills.
Joining McLeay in double-figures was junior Ashley Freeman (14), senior Jenny Rankin (10), freshman Carlie Christensen (10), and junior Heather Hainline (10). UNO recorded 74 kills in the match and outhit Minnesota-Duluth, the league's top hitting team, .233 to .205.
Besides McLeay, the Mavericks had two other players with 20-or more digs, including senior Julia McConahay with a team-high 22 and junior Chelsea Miller with 20.
The Mavericks dominated at the net defensively, recording a season-high 30 blocks, compared to just 13 for Minnesota Duluth.
Minnesota Duluth was led by senior outside hitter Callie Zwettler who tallied 21 kills and 16 digs. Defensively, the Bulldogs were paced by libero Allison Boddy, who registered a match-high 31 digs.
No. 21 Augustana Outlasts UNO in Five Games:
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Avenging an earlier season five-game loss to the Mavericks, Augustana returned the favor with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-21,30-13, 22-30, 15-11) victory over Nebraska-Omaha in North Central Conference volleyball action Saturday Night (Oct. 23) before 515 fans at the Elmen Center.
Nebraska-Omaha (14-7, 5-3 NCC) played inconsistently, recording negative hitting percentages in games two and three, while hitting just .040 in the deciding fifth game.
The Mavericks were led by senior Amy McLeay, who notched her team-leading 13th double-double on the season with 16 kills and 16 digs. Junior Christie Johnson also recorded a double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs. Junior Ashley Freeman added 11 kills and six blocks in the losing effort.
Leading the Mavericks defensively was junior Chelsea Miller, who registered a career and season team-high 30 digs.
Augustana (15-8, 5-4 NCC) had five players in double-figures in kills, including Abby McDonald (15), Kara Johnson (14), Andrea Oswald (11), Terrin Post (10), and Nicole Steffl (10).
Shires Earns 300th Career Victory:
Rose Shires picked up her 300th career victory when the Mavericks swept Hillsdale 3-0 (30-17, 31-29, 30-25) on Aug. 28 at the North Alabama Classic. Shires has amassed a 310-171 (. 645) career record in her 15th season as the Mavericks' mentor. Shires, the 1996 AVCA Division II national coach of the year, is the second winningest coach in the school's history behind Janice Kruger who recorded a 352-96 mark in her nine Maverick seasons from 1979-87.
Rankin Joins 1,000-Kill Club:
With her third kill in the Mavericks' 3-0 sweep over Minnesota State on Oct. 2, outside hitter Jenny Rankin became just the 15th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. Rankin, a senior from North Platte, Neb., has now registered 1,055 kills in her four-year Maverick career.
