UNO Extends McKenna Pact 4 Years

Interim Athletic Director Bill Wakefield said today that men's basketball coach Kevin McKenna's contract has been extended four years through June 30, 2008.
McKenna led the Mavericks to their first North Central Conference championship in 20 years last year and has taken the team to two NCAA II tournaments. The Mavs were 22-8 last season and are 66-27, including a 31-17 NCC record, in three years.
"Kevin has done a great job of establishing UNO as a solid, competitive program in a short time," Wakefield said. "It has been a great relationship and one that we hope will continue for many years."
McKenna was equally pleased with the new contract.
"I'm excited and pleased because it gives me and my staff the opportunity to continue to build on the success we've had," he said. "I'm grateful for the support I've received from the athletic department and the administration."
McKenna took over a program that was 9-17 in 2000-01 and recorded a 24-9 record, a second-place NCC finish and a trip to the NCAA II tournament in 2001-02. His 2002-03 squad was 20-10 and last year's team came on strong to capture the NCC title, the post-season tournament championship and then made another appearance in the NCAA II tournament, finising 22-8.
The Mavericks open the 2004-05 season Nov. 15 at Nebraska-Kearney and will play their home opener Nov. 18 against Midland Lutheran.
