Early Start Lifts Spartans Past Mavs

East Lansing, Michigan--The UNO hockey team lost for the first time this season, dropping a 5-2 decision to Michigan State on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Michigan State jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 16-3 advantage in shots after the opening 20 minutes. David Booth and Colton Fretter each scored on rebound goals at 13:36 and 14:52 to put the Spartans up 2-0. Ash Goldie then scored the final goal of the period on the power play when he popped a wrist shot over the right shoulder of goaltender Chris Holt with 17 seconds left in the period.
UNO then broke its streak of three-straight games without a goal at Munn Ice Arena in the second period when Bryan Marshall took advantage of a turnover on the goalline by MSU goaltender Matt Migliaccio and flicked in an uncontested wrist shot at the 10-minute mark to make the score 3-1.
The Mavericks carried that momentum into the third period and came within one goal (3-2) when Dan Hacker scored 1:07 into the final stanza. Hacker took a shot from the right half board and the puck deflected off a MSU defender and into the net.
Michigan State responded six minutes later when Kevin Estrada scored on a one-timer to give the Spartans a two-goal cushion. Mike Lalonde later scored on the power play at 13:40 to extend MSU's lead to 5-2.
Nebraska-Omaha was outshot 44-19 in the contest and had one power play on the night, which lasted only 23 seconds. Michigan State converted on 2-of-6 power plays.
UNO's Chris Holt made 39 saves in the losing effort.
The Mavs (4-1-0, 2-1-0 CCHA) will meet Michigan State (2-3-0, 1-2-0 CCHA) again on Saturday in the series finale at 6:05 p.m. (central time).
