Oct 30, 2004 | Hockey
East Lansing, Michigan--Goaltender Chris Holt made 28 saves and four different Mavericks recorded goals as Nebraska-Omaha snapped a five-game losing streak to No. 14 Michigan State, winning 5-2 Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.
The Mavericks struck first on David Phillips' goal at 10:33 of the opening period. Phillips took a breakout pass from Brandon Scero and beat MSU defenseman A.J. Thelen 1-on-1 to knock home his second goal of the season.
UNO extended their lead to 4-0 in the second period on goals by Scott Parse, Bryan Marshall and Bill Thomas. Parse tipped home a shot from Kaleb Betts on the power play at 3:23. Marshall scored his second goal of the series when he popped a wrist shot past Matt Migliaccio at 12:22. Thomas then added a shorthanded goal two minutes later on a breakaway.
Michigan State staged a late rally in the third when Drew Miller and Tommy Goebel each scored 42 seconds apart to come within 4-2. But Bill Thomas added his second goal of the night, an empty net tally with 1:04 to play to seal the victory.
Chris Holt recorded his fifth win of the season and earned his first CCHA regular season road victory since last November. UNO's five victories this month matches the highest number of October victories since the 2000-2001 season.
MSU goaltender Dominic Vicari left the game with 3:38 left to play in the first period due to a head injury. Scott Parse collided with Vicari after he was pushed from behind by a MSU defender on an odd-man rush. Matt Migliaccio relieved Vicari and surrendered three goals.
Michigan State (2-4-0, 1-3-0 CCHA) outshot UNO 30-27 in the contest but never converted on the power play, going 0-for-7. UNO was 1-for-4 during man-advantage opportunites.
Nebraska-Omaha (5-1-0, 3-1-0 CCHA) is on the road again next week and will take on Alaska Fairbanks next Friday and Saturday.
