Late UNK Layup Edges Mavs, 52-50

KEARNEY, NEB. -- Anne Manning's layup with 11 seconds left lifted Nebraska-Kearney to a 52-50 win, spoiling the UNO coaching debut of Patty Patton Shearer Monday night in front of 1,420 at the Health & Sports Center.
The Mavs battled from 11 points down the second half and held the Lopers without a field goal for eight minutes. Lindsey Petersen knocked down a three-pointer from the right side with 38 seconds left to forge a tie at 50, but UNK worked the ball to Manning, cutting down the right side of the lane for the go-ahead shot. A long last-second three-point shot by LaCheryl Prince missed for the Mavs.
JJ Smith led UNO with 15 points and added 10 rebounds, Petersen added nine points and guard Karen Thies had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with four points and five assists.
UNK held a 23-19 lead at the half as both teams suffered from cold shooting. The Mavs hit just 25 percent from the floor and UNK 26.9 percent.
The Lopers went on a 9-2 run to start the second half, opening their biggest lead of the night, 32-21, with 17:11 left. The Mavericks whittled that down to two, 40-38, by the midway mark as Smith hit a layup, but UNK's 8-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Amber Whitlock with 8:12 left, put UNK up, 48-40.
The Mavericks shut down UNK except for a pair of free throws, allowing Petersen to tie the game, until Manning's layup.
Kalee Modlin led UNK with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Whitlock added 14 and Manning nine.
The Mavericks' next action will be Saturday afternoon when they play at Rockhurst at 4.
