Mavs Down Rockhurst, 78-57, to Earn 1st Win

KANSAS CITY, MO. -- JJ Smith, Karen Thies and Andrea Schoepf combined for 56 points Saturday afternoon to lead the Mavericks to a 78-57 non-conference win over Rockhurst University. The victory was the first of the season for the Mavs and new head coach Patty Patton Shearer.
Smith scored a game-high 21 points, Thies counted 20 and Schoepf, who hit four of six three-point shots, had 15. The trio shot a combined 17-for-30 from the field, including 8-for-14 from behind the arc.
"We played well offensively and shot the ball great," Patton Shearer said after the game on her post-game radio show. "We showed a lot of intensity."
The Mavs, who are now 1-1, broke out front early and claimed a 43-36 halftime lead while connecting on 53.3 percent of their shots from the field. Thies scored 15 of her points before halftime. UNO finished with 49 percent shooting from the field.
The Mavericks held Rockhurst (1-2) to just 27.3 percent shooting the second half. UNO also forced 21 turnovers and outrebounded the Hawks 30-20 for the game. Jessica Rethman led the Hawks with 16 points and Kelly Nitsche added 13.
UNO's next action will be in its own Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 26-27. The Mavs will play Chadron State on Friday and Winona State on Saturday at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. Both games will tip-off at 6 p.m.
