Mavs, Buckeyes Skate to 4-4 Tie

Ohio State rallied from two goals down to tie the Mavericks 4-4 in overtime Saturday night in front of 7,567 at Qwest Center Omaha. Scott Parse scored a pair of goals for UNO, which claimed three of four points in the weekend series with the Buckeyes and moved to 7-4-1 on the year and 5-4-1 in the CCHA.
The No. 7 Buckeyes, who were in first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association before the game, are 9-4-1 and 7-2-1 and remained four points up on third-place UNO.
Ohio State jumped out front 2-0 in the first period on power play goals by Rod Pelley at 9:50 and Tom Fritsche at 14:43.
The Mavericks, who blanked OSU 4-0 Friday night, gained the momentum on David Phillips' fifth goal of the year, on the power play, at 16:22 of the first on assists from Kaleb Betts and Bill Thomas.
The comeback continued into the second period as Brandon Scero scored his third of the year on a power play at 2:50 to tie the game on passes from Micah Sanford and Bryan Marshall. UNO took the lead on Parse's sixth goal of the season on a five-on-three power play at 5:47 with assists from Marshall and Alex Nikiforuk, then expanded the margin on another Parse goal, this one at even strength, at 14:30. Thomas and Bobby Henderson earned assists on the goal.
Then, it was OSU that turned the momentum around in the waning minutes of the period. UNO's Bobby Henderson was given a five-minute major and ejected for spearing at 16:10. The Buckeyes took advantage, scoring at 18:23 on Andrew Schembri's second goal of the year on passes from J.B. Bittner and Jason DeSantis.
The Mavs killed off the remainder of the power play, but DeSantis beat UNO goaltender Chris Holt on an unassisted shorthanded effort at 7:04 of the third for his first career goal to tie the game.
Holt, who made 39 saves to earn the shutout Friday, came up big in the third as the Buckeyes outshot UNO 10-1 the final period. He finished with 26 saves, with two of them coming in the extra session.
Ohio State outshot the Mavericks 30-21 for the game.
UNO is idle until resuming CCHA play at Northern Michigan in a Dec. 3-4 series.
