Petersen, Thies Lead Mavs Past Chadron State

Lindsey Petersen scored 19 points and Karen Thies added 18 and dished out five assists Friday night to lead the Mavericks to a 74-57 win over Chadron State in the Thanksgiving Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks will host Winona State in the second round of the Classic Saturday night at 6.
UNO improved to 2-1 on the young season with the non-conference win over the Eagles, who fell to 0-4. Winona State lost Friday afternoon to South Dakota, 70-55 in the first game of the Classic.
The Mavericks trailed only twice in the early moments of the game before pulling away to a 40-28 halftime lead as Thies scored 10 points.
The lead fell below double digits just once in the second half as Petersen connected on all three of her three-pointers in the first six minutes of the half. The last one produced a 52-37 lead and capped an 8-2 UNO run.
JJ Smith added nine points and freshman Sarah Austin pulled down a game-high and season-best 10 rebounds to go with six points for the Mavs. UNO outrebounded the Eagles 42-36.
Taylor Cady led Chadron State, from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, with 20 points and six rebounds. Chadron State will play South Dakota at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second round.
