Mavericks Start Strong, Finish Off Orediggers

Andre Tarpley led four players in double figures as the Mavericks recorded a 74-61 win over Colorado School of Mines in the UNO Thanksgiving Classic at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse in front of 1,150 fans. Tarpley scored 19 points as the Mavericks improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Mavs built a big lead in the first half while holding Mines to just five first half field goals and 19.2 percent shooting from the floor. Tarpley scored 13 of his points in the first half and helped fuel a 20-3 run that gave UNO a 26-point lead late in the half. The Mavs led at the break, 44-20.
Abdul Mills added 15 points and Levy Jones and Randy Bland 11 each as the Mavericks held the Orediggers at arm's length the rest of the way. Mines crept to within 11 points at one point, trailing 68-57 with three minutes to play after a three-point play by Stephen Bahl. Tarpley promptly hit a three-pointer to stop the rally 32 seconds later and the Mavs cruised to their second win in as many nights.
Bahl, who scored 50 points in a Friday night double overtime loss to South Dakota, led the Orediggers with 19 points. Franklin Ryk added 17 points and Farris Broussard 12.
UNO, led by Jones' 11 rebounds, held a 47-29 advantage over Mines on the boards and finished shooting 44.9 percent from the field to 31.5 percent for Mines.
UNO's next action will come this weekend in the University of South Dakota Classic in Vermillion. The Mavs will face Minnesota State-Moorhead at 6 p.m. Friday and Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at 6 p.m.
