Mavs Fall Again in Fairbanks

Alaska Fairbanks held off a third period rally and completed a two-game sweep of Nebraska-Omaha, defeating the Mavericks 3-2 at the Carlson Center on Saturday night.
The two teams skated to a scoreless opening period before the Nanooks drew first blood when Ryan McLeod scored at the 5:08 mark of the second stanza. McLeod's shot from the right circle beat UNO goaltender Chris Holt glove side, one second after a UAF power play had expired. Curtis Frazier struck two minutes later when he was left alone in front of the net and tucked his shot under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead.
Nebraska-Omaha battled back in the third period to tie the score on goals by Scott Parse and Brandon Scero. Parse found the net at the 4:39 mark on a wrist shot from the left circle. Scero then evened the score at 2-2 when he scored his second goal of the season after a UAF turnover in the neutral zone at 7:36 of the period.
Alaska Fairbanks regained the lead at 3-2 after UNO's Kaleb Betts was issued a five-minute major for checking from behind. UAF's Kelly Czuy capitalized on the five-minute power play when he tapped home a rebound with 11:41 remaining in the game.
Czuy was caught for hooking with 3:44 left to play to give UNO one last chance to tie the game on the power play but Nanook goaltender Wylie Rogers and the UAF penalty killing unit shut the door to preserve the victory.
The Mavs outshot Alaska Fairbanks 38-27 in the contest. UNO killed off 7-of-8 power play chances but were 0-for-8 in man-advantage opportunities.
UNO is 0-10-4 all-time at the Carlson Center, dating back to 1998.
Nebraska-Omaha (5-3-0, 3-3-0 CCHA) returns home to begin a four-game homestand next weekend, starting with Bowling Green on November 12-13.
