Mavs Fall to Bearcats on Last-Second Layup

Meghan Blay's steal and layup with one second remaining capped a furious Northwest Missouri State rally from 13 points down in the second half and handed the Mavericks a heart-breaking 67-65 setback Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavs fell for the first time this year at home and dropped to 5-4 on the season while the Bearcats improved to 6-3.
UNO, which forged a 39-34 halftime lead, expanded that margin to as many as 13 points the second half before Northwest Missouri State rallied with an 11-10 run midway through the half.
The Mavs never gave up the lead, however, coming back on a pair of Lindsey Petersen three-point baskets, and led 64-57 with 3:23 to play.
Blay started the comeback with a three-point play with 3:09 left, cutting the UNO lead to 64-60 and starting a closing 10-1 run by the Bearcats. Laura Friederich then hit a short jumper and Mandi Schumacher made one of two foul shots to bring Northwest Missouri State within a point, 64-63 with 1:39 left.
UNO's JJ Smith made one of two foul shots with 1:19 left, but the Bearcats came out of a time out to tie the game on a rebound layup by Ashely Poptanycz with 37 seconds left.
The Bearcats got the ball back, but missed a shot and UNO guard Karen Thies rebounded under the Northwest Missouri State basket with six seconds left. Blay poked the ball loose, retrieved it and layed in the winning basket uncontested.
Thies was UNO's leader with 21 points and five assists to go with four steals in the game. She also had seven rebounds and hit three three-pointers. Smith added 15 points and seven rebounds and Andrea Schoepf contributed 10 points.
Poptanycz led the Bearcats with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Friederich added 10 points and nine rebounds.
