Thies, Smith Lead Mavericks to 76-50 Win

The Mavericks shot 53 percent from the field while pulling away from Colorado State-Pueblo for a 76-50 non-conference win Monday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. Karen Thies' 18 points and JJ Smith's 17 led UNO, which improved to 6-4 on the season.
The Mavs never trailed and built big leads early in each half only to see the Thunderwolves fight back with runs. Ebony Walker's 14 points and Stacie Nutt's 10 led Colorado State-Pueblo, which fell to 2-7.
UNO went up by 21-4 just 7:15 into the game after back-to-back three-pointers by Thies and Andrea Schoepf. CSU-Pueblo used a 15-4 run, however, to slice the margin down to just 30-24 with 2:27 left before halftime. Thies answered with a three-pointer and Leslie Ross and Lindsey Petersen added layups to boost the Mavs to a 37-25 lead at the break.
Thies scored on a three and a layup to open the second half to build the lead back to 17, but the Thunderwolves' 12-3 run brought them back to within 45-37. That was as close as CSU-Pueblo could get, however, as UNO held the Thunderwolves without a field goal for nearly five minutes and to just two in the final 11:30.
UNO's 15-3 run to close the game clinched its fifth home victory of the season.
The Mavericks will be back on the court Wednesday night, hosting Dordt College at 7 in Sapp Fieldhouse.
