Thies, Mavs Steal 78-55 Win From Mount Mercy

Karen Thies scored 20 points and had 10 steals and JJ Smith pulled down 13 rebounds Monday night to lead the Mavericks to a 78-55 non-conference win over Mount Mercy College at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The win was the third straight for the Mavs and lifted them to 8-4 on the season.
The Mavs started out hot, hitting 74.1 percent from the field the first half and led by as many as 20 points. UNO scored the first seven points and used a 14-2 run to build its biggest lead of the half, 29-9, with 8:54 left. UNO settled for a 47-31 lead at the break.
The Mavericks kept the Mustangs out of contention with defense the second half. Mount Mercy missed its first eight shots and trailed by as many as 31 points, 70-39, with 8:26 to play.
UNO finished the game with 52.8 percent shooting for the game, but held the Mustangs to just 25 percent the second half and to 33.3 percent for the game.
UNO's Smith also added 18 points and four assists. Lindsey Petersen had 13 points and Sarah Austin 10. The 10 steals by Thies ties her with the second-highest total in school history, by Jill Dau in 1988-89. The school record is 12 by Linda Roe in 1992-93.
Katie Smith led Mount Mercy with 21 points. The Mustangs fell to 5-9.
