Mavs' Quick Start Overcomes Metro State

DENVER, COLO. -- Karen Thies scored 21 points and JJ Smith 20 Wednesday night as the Mavericks jumped to an early lead and made it stand up for a 73-56 non-conference win over Metro State at the Auraria Events Center. UNO, now 9-4, will play Colorado School of Mines at 3 p.m. CST Thursday in the second round of the Metro State Classic.
Smith scored the first six points of the game to help the Mavs break out quickly to a 15-5 lead after the first seven minutes. The Mavericks held the Roadrunners to just three field goals in racing to a 21-7 lead 8:30 into the contest.
UNO led 37-19 at halftime and built the advantage to as many as 27 midway through the second half. Metro State, now 9-2, closed the gap with a late run, but never mounted a serious threat to the Mavericks, who have won four straight games.
Thies connected on seven of 10 shots including five of six three-pointers and also added five assists while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Smith hit nine of 13 shots from the field and Lindsey Petersen added 10 points.
Stephenie Davis led the Roadrunners with 14 points.
