BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Abdul Mills scored 19 points to lead a balanced offense as the Mavericks raced to their 10th straight victory Wednesday night, 77-59, over Wayne (Neb.) State at Frost Arena in the Burger King Holiday Classic. No. 10 UNO, off to its best start in over 70 years, improved to 13-1 while defeating the Wildcats for the second time this year.
Only the unbeaten 1931-32 Omaha University team, coached by Sed Hartman, recorded more wins in its first 14 games. That team eventually finished 20-0.
Mills, a senior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., hit four of his five three-point shots and added three rebounds. Junior guard Calvin Kapels scored 10 points and Jamaal Byers 9 as 10 of the 11 Mavericks who played scored.
UNO's next action will be Friday afternoon at 1 at Sapp Fieldhouse against Doane College. The Mavericks open North Central Conference play Jan. 6 against Augustana at Sapp Fielhdouse.
Mills scored seven points as UNO opened the game with a 19-4 win over the Wildcats. The Mavericks led by as many as 21 points the first half before Wayne State battled back with a 12-2 run and cut the UNO lead to 35-24 by the break.
The Wildcats continued to rally, closing to within 36-28 in the opening two minutes of the second half before Mills relieved the pressure by hitting nine points on a pair of three-pointers and three free throws in a 15-2 run. The Wildcats never recovered.
UNO built the lead to as many as 27 with eight minutes remaining and cruised to the win, the second over the Wildcats this month. UNO downed Wayne State 81-73 in Omaha Dec. 7 in the earlier meeting.
Brett Cain led the Wildcats with 10 points.
UNO won the battle of the boards, 38-31, led by Levy Jones, who had six rebounds and added six points.
