VERMILLION, S.D. -- Southwest Minnesota State improved to 6-0 on the season with a 58-46 victory over the UNO women Friday in the first round of the South Dakota Classic held at the DakotaDome.
Both teams struggled in the first half of the ball game, as each team shot under 40 percent from the field. SMSU ended the first half with a 10-4 run to take a 24-19 halftime lead.
The Mavericks cut the deficit to four points twice in the second half but could not overcome a season-high 24 turnovers.
Nebraska-Omaha had two players finish the game in double-digits scoring, as J.J. Smith had a team-high 15 points and Karen Theis added 14. Foul trouble was a key in slowing the Maverick offense as Carlye Jones played in just 17 minutes and scored eight points.
SMSU's Michelle Bruns scored a game-high 18 points. Kelly Crimi added 11 points, knocking down 3-of-5 from three-point range. The Mustangs made 11-of-16 free throws while UNO made 12-of-19. SMSU won the rebound battle, 34-29.
