Maverick Rally Spoiled in OT Loss

DENVER, COLO. -- Karen Thies' steal and layup with 54 seconds left capped a Maverick rally from 10 points down to force overtime Thursday, but Colorado School of Mines pulled away in the extra session for a 63-53 win in the Metro State Classic at the Auraria Events Center. JJ Smith led the Mavs, now 9-5, with 25 points and nine rebounds.
The Mavs fell behind in the extra session on Kristin Horkey's three-pointer with 4:04 to play and missed all seven shots they took from the field. The Orediggers scored the first 12 points in overtime until Smith hit two free throws with three seconds left.
Colorado Mines, now 8-2, took control with an 8-0 run midway through the first half and eventually took a 25-15 lead with four minutes left. Smith hit a three-pointer and a shot at the buzzer to help UNO close the gap to 27-22 at halftime.
The Mavericks scraped back from a seven-point deficit early in the second half to tie on a three-pointer by Chelsie Groslie and take the lead, 34-31 on Karen Thies' three-pointer with 14 minutes left.
UNO then went cold, hitting only two field goals over the next nine minutes before another three by Groslie brought the Mavs within 46-44 with 4:52 left. Thies' three-point play with 2:54 left cut the gap to 50-49 with 2:54 left, but the Orediggers got one point back at the foul line by Ashley Gronewoller and held a 51-49 lead into the final minute.
Thies tied the game with a steal and a layup with 54 seconds left and both teams missed shots to force the overtime.
Thies scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to go with five assists and four steals for the Mavericks.
Gina Cornelio led Mines with 18 points, while Gronewoller added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UNO's next action will be on Monday night at 6 at Sapp Fieldhouse against Peru State College.
