Minutemen Skate Past Mavs, 5-2

AMHERST, MASS. -- Stephen Werner collected two goals and an assist to lift Massachusetts to a 5-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha Thursday night at the Mullins Center.
For the second straight night, the Mavs drew first blood. Scott Parse connected for his 10th goal of the season at the 2:05 mark of the second period. The Minutemen tied the score at 1-1 when Matt Burto scored on the power play at 14:42 of the period.
Massachusetts then took control of the game early in the final stanza with a flurry of goals in just over a span of three minutes. Werner broke the tie with a shorthanded goal 1:26 into the period. Zech Klann then scored 55 seconds later with an even strength tally. Michael Kostka made the score 4-1 when he scored at the 3:02 mark.
The Mavericks tried to claw their way back into the game with a Bill Thomas power play goal halfway through the period. UNO had several other opportunites to close the gap but goaltender Gabe Winer stood his ground.
Werner added his second goal of the evening with an empty netter with two seconds remaining.
Nebraska-Omaha (8-9-1, 6-7-1 CCHA) returns to CCHA play next weekend when they host Northern Michigan for a two-game set Friday and Saturday.
