Northern Michigan Completes Sweep of UNO

MARQUETTE, MICH.-- The Wildcats struck early and then held off a late charge by UNO, winning 6-3 and completed a two-game sweep of the Mavs at the Berry Events Center on Saturday.
UNO freshman goaltender Eric Aarnio made his first collegiate start and was pulled 39 seconds into the opening period after surrendering two Wildcat goals.
Mike Santorelli took advantage of a UNO turnover on the blueline and scored on an odd-man rush 24 seconds into the contest. Tim Hartung then made the score 2-0 just 15 seconds later when he beat Aarnio with a wrist shot in the slot. The Mavs' Chris Holt was then called upon and finished the game with 20 saves.
Northern Michigan extended its lead to 4-0 in the second period on goals by Matt Ciancio and Darin Olver.
The Mavericks got on the board at 3:37 of the third period on a power play goal by Scott Parse. Santorelli then tallied his second goal of the evening at the 10:47 mark to make the score 5-1.
Nebraska-Omaha rallied to make the score 5-3 with 3:58 remaining in the game when Alex Nikiforuk knocked home a wrist shot from the crease. Dan Hacker added his fourth goal of the year a minute earlier to cut the margin to three.
Northern Michigan ended the UNO threat with an empty netter by Andrew Contois with 47 seconds left in the game. Contois finished the night with a goal and three assists.
UNO (7-6-1, 5-6-1 CCHA) returns home next week to host Lake Superior State on December 9-11.
