Mavericks Snuff Flames, 60-57

Karen Thies' 13 second-half points helped the Mavericks past stubborn College of St. Mary, 60-57, Tuesday night. Thies led UNO with 19 points, including three key three-pointers after halftime to help the Mavs remain unbeaten at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks, now 5-3 overall and 4-0 at home, spurted to an early 13-2 lead before the Flames turned up the heat with a 24-7 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 26-20 lead. The Mavs rallied, scoring the final six points of the half and tied the game at the break on JJ Smith's layup in the final 30 seconds.
Thies hit a quick three in the opening minute of the second half as the Mavericks scored the first five points to take the lead for good. She added two more on consecutive shots in the final five minutes when the lead give the Mavs a 57-48 cushion with 3:41 to play.
Still, the Mavs had to survive a rally by the Flames, who caught up at the foul line. Katie Jo Lawton's six straight free shots narrowed the gap to just 59-55 with a minute to play. Sandy Kirchner then hit two more from the line with six seconds remaining to make it 59-57.
But the Flames, with just four team fouls the second half, were forced to foul three times in the final seconds before sending Lindsey Petersen to the line. Petersen, who finished with 11 points, made one and the Flames, with three seconds left, couldn't unload a final shot.
College of St. Mary was led by Jenna Kreikmeier with 12 points, Ashley Austin with 11 and Mikki Tillman with 10. The Flames fell to 4-8 on the season.
UNO will try to protect its home court streak Saturday afternoon when it hosts Northwest Missouri State at 2.
