Mavs Fall at Minnesota State, 71-51

MANKATO, MINN. -- Minnesota State, Mankato went on a 36-5 run in the first half, erasing an early UNO lead, to hand the Mavericks their ninth straight North Central Conference loss, 71-51, Friday night. The Mavs will try to regroup Saturday when they visit St. Cloud State for a 6 p.m. contest.
Sophomore forward JJ Smith led the Mavs with 16 points, hitting 7 of her 13 shots. Lindsey Petersen led UNO with eight rebounds.
UNO (4-17, 0-9) sped to a 13-4 lead in the opening minutes of the game at Bresnan Arena, but MSU recovered, scored 12 straight points and went to the break with a 40-18 lead.
The Mavericks battled back to within 17, trailing 49-32 midway through the second half after a three-pointer by Krissy Turman and a layup by Carlye Jones, but that was as close as UNO could get. MSU went on a 13-3 run -- with UNO's only points on another Turman trey -- and squeleched any comeback hopes the Mavs had.
The Mavericks, who shot just 30 percent the first half, improved to 43.3 percent the second and 38 percent for the game, but 29 turnovers and 23 personal fouls, to MSU's 12, hurt their chances.
Hannah Stolba led Minnesota State with 21 points, Alanna Wahl added 13 and Stacie Johnson 12.
