Hot-shooting Minnesota State Downs Mavs, 86-74

MANKATO, MINN. -- Minnesota State shot 65 percent the second half and poured in 55 points to pull away from the Mavericks Friday night with an 86-74 North Central Conference win that knocked UNO out of second place. The Mavs complete their final regular season road trip with a game Saturday night at St. Cloud State.
UNO fell to 15-7 overall in dropping their second straight game and is now 5-4 in the NCC. Tola Dada led the Mavericks with 21 points.
South Dakota State, with an 88-71 win over North Dakota State, tied the Bison for first place in the NCC with 6-3 records, while UNO, St. Cloud State and MSU are lodged in a tie for third at 5-4. St. Cloud State lost to South Dakota in overtime Friday night, 91-84.
The Mavericks led by as many as eight points the first half before MSU came back to trim the margin to one at the half, 32-31.
MSU (16-6, 5-4) raced past the Mavericks by hitting the second half and put it away down the stretch with its free throw shooting. Minnesota State hit 22 of 24 from the line the second half and 31 of 33 for the game.
After Ty Graham's jumper tied the game at 59 with 9:18 to play in the game, MSU took control with a 9-0 run, with six points coming from the free throw line. The Mavericks could never pull closer than seven after that, trailing 79-72 with 2:16 left on a Graham three-pointer.
MSU connected on 13 of 20 second half shots and was led by five double-figure scorers. Luke Anderson led the way with 20 points and six rebounds and Jamel Staten added 18 points, including 13-for-13 shooting from the line.
Besides Dada, who hit 9 of his 12 shots from the floor, the Mavs were led by Ty Graham with 14 and Ryan Curtis with 11.
