Mav Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Ohio State

Columbus, Ohio--Nebraska-Omaha's winless streak was extended to eight games with a 4-3 loss to No. 14 Ohio State Saturday in front of 4,601 at Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes' start to the game was very similar to Friday's start, only quicker. OSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead 1:28 into the first period on a power play goal by Andrew Schembri and an even-strength goal by Bryce Anderson.
UNO cut that lead in half when Alex Nikiforuk scored his fifth goal of the season on the power play at 4:59 of the first period. Andrew Wong fed Nikiforuk from the bottom of the right circle and Nikiforuk skated past an OSU defender and beat goaltender Dave Caruso with a nifty backhand shot.
Ohio State then took advantage of several Maverick penalties and chipped in two more power plays goals for a 4-1 lead to end the first period. UNO starting goaltender Kris Tebbs was pulled 8:12 into the opening period after surrendering three goals and was relieved by Chris Holt.
The Mavs battled back to make the score 4-3 in the second period on goals by Scott Parse and Mike Lefley. Andrew Wong made a pass from behind the net to Parse in the crease and he punched in his own rebound. Lefley's goal was a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Caruso between the legs.
A total of 30 penalties and 84 penalty minutes were called between the two teams. The Mavericks were dealt 19 penalties for 62 minutes.
Ohio State outshot Nebraska-Omaha 27-25 for the second-straight night. OSU was 3-for-6 on the power play while UNO was 1-for-5.
UNO (6-19-5, 4-16-4 CCHA) will travel to East Lansing next weekend and take on the Spartans of Michigan State.
