Mavs Get Clutch Win at St. Cloud State, 77-67

ST. CLOUD, MINN. -- The Mavericks kept pace in the tight North Central Conference race with a clutch 77-67 win Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall over St. Cloud State. UNO improved to 16-7 overall and 6-4 in the NCC with the victory while St. Cloud State slipped to 5-5 in the league and 15-8 while losing its second straight home game.
NCC co-leaders North Dakota State and South Dakota State each posted wins Saturday night.
Calvin Kapels had a key steal and knocked down a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds to secure the victory. The Columbus, Neb., sophomore guard finished with 11 points and tied a career high with seven assiss. UNO was led by Andre Tarpley's 15 points and seven rebounds and Ty Graham added 12.
UNO came from six points behind the second half to take a 65-58 lead with 5:24 left on Grahma's three-point play, but the Huskies, who lost to South Dakota in overtime Friday night, wouldn't roll over. SCSU scored eight straight points and took a 66-65 lead with three minutes left on Nate Miller's jumper.
Tarpley hit one free throw to tie the game a half-minute later before Kapels put UNO out front for good with a pair of free throws with 1:54 remianing, 68-66. Tarpley added a three-pointer with 1:10 left for a 71-66 UNO lead and the Mavs sealed the win at the line. Graham hit all four of his attempts in the final 36 seconds and Kapels added a pair after his steal with 13 seconds remaining.
The first half was tight all the way, with UNO holding the biggest lead, 16-11, midway through. The Huskies rebounded and took a 31-30 lead into the break.
UNO now will play four straight home games to finish the regular season. The Mavs host North Dakota Friday night and NCC co-leader North Dakota State Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
St. Cloud State, which finishes the regular season with four road games, was led by Matt Siegle's 17 points and seven rebounds. Alex Carlson added 12 points and Jason Allen 10.
UNO, which shot 62.5 percent the second half and 48 percent for the game, committed just 11 turnovers and outrebounded the Huskies, 35-30.
