Feb 20, 2004 | Women's Basketball
JJ Smith scored a career-high 24 points to lead a gallant upset effort by the Mavericks Friday night, but No. 9 North Dakota held on to register a 70-58 win at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Fighting Sioux upped their record to 20-4 overall and moved into a tie for first at 8-3 in the North Central Conference in dealing the Mavericks their 11th straight league loss. UNO is now 5-19 overall and 0-11 in the NCC before Saturday night's home court contest against No. 6 ranked North Dakota State.
The Mavericks led just once, and then briefly as Lindsey Petersen hit a three-pointer at the 12:15 mark of the first half for a 15-13 lead. Carissa Jahner answered in kind with a three 12 seconds later to reclaim the lead for good for UND.
The Mavericks stuck close before North Dakota scored the final five points of the first half for a 36-25 lead at the break.
The Fighting Sioux ran up a 17-point lead early in the second, but the Mavericks wouldn't go away.
Smith, a sophomore forward from Lincoln, scored the first six points of the second half for UNO and then ignited a rally with six more in a row midway through the half. The 11-3 run, capped by another three-pointer by Petersen, sliced UND's lead to 53-46 with 7:40 to play.
The Mavericks could only pull another point closer before UND stemmed the tide on the strength of three-pointers by Amy Mahlum and Kristi Boese in the final 93 seconds.
Smith, whose previous high was an 18-point effort against St. Cloud State, also grabbed eight rebounds. She hit nine of 16 shots from the field and all six of her shots from the free throw line. Petersen added 13 points.
North Dakota had four double figure scorers, led by Mahlum and Boese, each with 16. Mary Perrizo added 13 and Marisa Leighton 12. Boese grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
