Mavs Keep Pace in NCC With 81-69 Victory

The Mavericks kept pace in the tightly-packed North Central Conference with an 81-69 victory in front of 2,100 at Sapp Fieldhouse over North Dakota Friday night behind Ty Graham's 17 points and six assists. The Mavs, now tied with North Dakota State for second in the NCC, will host the Bison Saturday night at 8.
UNO, 17-7 overall and 7-4 in the league, pulled away from the Fighting Sioux (13-11, 4-7) in workmanlike fashion the first half, despite the fact that UND shot 62 percent from the field.
The Mavericks scored 10 points in the final three minutes of the half, using three-pointers by Graham and Andre Tarpley for a 41-31 lead at halftime.
North Dakota made a run early in the second half, closing the gap to four, 48-44, with 14:31 left on Evan Lindahl's field goal, but could get no closer. Calvin Kapels cut inside for a layup and Zac Robinson sunk a three-pointer to get the Mavs out of danger.
Graham's layup with 8:46 left restored the 10-point lead, 64-54, and the Mavs never let the margin get into single digits afterward, holding UND to 44.4 percent from the floor the second half.
Todd Rypkema led the Fighting Sioux with 28 points and six rebounds, while Lindahl added 16.
Senior forward Tola Dada added 15 points for UNO, and Tarpley and Kapels each chipped in with 10.
South Dakota State (24-3, 8-3) moved alone into first place with a 91-69 win over St. Cloud State, while South Dakota knocked NDSU (14-10, 7-4) out of the top spot with a 105-96 decision in Vermillion.
