Vicari, Spartans Blank Mavs Again

East Lansing, Michigan--Michigan State goaltender Dominic Vicari blanked Nebraska-Omaha for the second-straight night as the Spartans defeated the Mavericks 5-0 in front of 6,678 at Munn Ice Arena Saturday night.
Vicari earned his sixth shutout of the season and freshman Tommy Goebel recorded a pair of goals to give MSU (20-15-1, 16-9-1 CCHA) their first home sweep this season and sole possession of second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
Colton Fretter gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead at 8:20 of the first period on an odd man rush. The Mavs held a 7-0 advantage in shots prior to Fretter's goal. Mike Lalonde and Goebel then extended Michigan State's lead to 3-0 in the second stanza. Lalonde scored 39 seconds into the period on another odd man rush and Goebel recorded a power play goal at 14:34.
Goebel's second goal of the night was off a rebound at 6:36 of the of the third period. Lee Falardeau also chipped in a power play goal at 13:06 to end scoring.
"When you have a team that's going through what we are going through right now, you find ways to beat yourselves," UNO head coach Mike Kemp said. "But I thought our guys still came out and played with some jump and determination even when we got down a couple of goals."
The loss to the Spartans extended Nebraska-Omaha's winless streak to 10 games (0-8-2). UNO goaltender Chris Holt made 37 saves in the losing effort. Holt stopped 65 of 73 shots in the two-game series.
Michigan State outshot UNO 42-35 in the game. The Spartans were 2-for-6 on the power play while UNO was 0-for-5.
Nebraska-Omaha (6-21-5, 4-18-4 CCHA) will host Alaska Fairbanks next weekend for their last CCHA home series of the year.
