Mavericks Fall in Finale to Vikings, 78-75

Augustana rallied from five points down in the closing three minutes to defeat the Mavericks 78-75 Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse, closing the book on the UNO season.
UNO, which ended the season 5-22 overall and 0-14 in the North Central Conference, appeared to be on track to post its first win in the league. The Mavs battled back from a 46-41 halftime deficit to take the lead after the break.
Lindsey Petersen nailed two early three-pointers and JJ Smith's layup capped a 5-0 run as UNO claimed a 53-49 lead with 16:35 left to play. The Mavericks held the advantage until the Vikings scrapped back and went ahead with 7:06 left on Laura Hensley's short jumper, 69-68.
Trailing 70-69 with 6:10 left, the Mavericks reeled off six straight points, getting a layup by Sara Myers and a pair of free throws each by Smith and Shannon Eggers for a 75-70 lead with 3:10 left to play.
But Augustana took its turn with a rally, tying the game with 1:58 left after a three-pointer by Andrea Seefeldt and a layup by Erin Johnson. Johnson added a free throw and Hensley knocked down two free shots with nine seconds left to seal the win.
Eggers led the Mavericks with a career-best 22 points. Smith added 14 points, Petersen 13 and Myers had 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead both teams.
Augustana had four players in double figures, led by Johnson with 23 points to go with nine rebounds. Jessica Klein added 19 and eight rebounds, Seefeldt 12 and Hensley 11.
The Vikings finished the regular season at 13-14 and 5-9 and in sixth place in the NCC and will play at North Dakota Tuesday night in the first round of the Wells Fargo Finals.
It was the final game behind the bench for UNO Coach Lisa Carlsen. Carlsen, who coached the Mavericks to a four-year record of 36-74, announced her resignation on Feb. 24.
