Cold-Shooting Mavericks Fall to USD, 63-47

No. 15 South Dakota held the Mavericks to just 27.6 percent shooting for the game in racing to a 63-47 North Central Conference victory at Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday night.
The Mavs, in losing their eighth-straight, fell to 4-16 overall and 0-8 in the league, while the Coyotes' records improved to 19-5 and 4-4.
USD's career scoring leader, Mandy Koupal, scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the assault. Sophomore JJ Smith led UNO with 16 points. Smith, who was 7-for-14 from the floor, was the only Maverick to score more than two field goals.
South Dakota's late 8-2 scoring run in the first half, and UNO's 22 percent field goal shooting the first 20 minutes, gave the Coyotes a 27-17 lead at the break.
UNO scored five of the first seven points after halftime to pull within 29-22, but the Coyotes then scored nine straight points and went on a 14-2 run to claim their biggest lead of the game, 43-24, with 13:08 left.
Smith scored four straight points at the five-minute mark to bring UNO back to within 10, 51-41, but the Mavericks couldn't draw any closer the rest of the way.
Vanessa Yanez added 13 points and nine rebounds for USD, which shot just 37.1 percent for the game.
The win was the seventh straight by the Coyotes in the all-time series.
UNO's next action will be on the road at Minnesota State, Mankato Feb. 13 and at St. Cloud State Feb. 14.
