South Dakota Deals Mavs 86-84 Loss

The Mavericks, who have made second-half comebacks from double-digit deficits common this season, came up a field goal short Saturday night in an 86-84 North Central Conference setback to South Dakota in front of 1,900 fans at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO rallied from 12 points down the second half and by five points down in the final 25 seconds to pull within a basket on Calvin Kapels' layup with 11 seconds left. USD's Vincent McGill missed two free shots with 10 seconds left, but Tola Dada's three-point attempt hit the rim at the buzzer.
The Mavs, who slipped into a tie with South Dakota State and St. Cloud State for second place in the NCC, fell to 15-6 and 5-3.
UNO, which ended an 11-game DakotaDome losing skid at South Dakota last Saturday, never led in the game, but staged numerous rallies throughout the night. UNO came from 14 points down midway through the first half to pull within one, 35-34, after a 14-5 run with 4:18 to play, but could never take the lead.
The Coyotes (13-7, 3-5), shot almost 55 percent the first half and snuffed the rally with a three-point play by Tommie King and a pair of free shots by Turner Trofholz. USD led at the half, 45-40.
USD went on a 9-2 run to open the second half and took a 54-42 lead on Derek Paben's three-pointer with 17:54 left.
The Mavs pecked away and trimmed the margin to as few as three twice, each time on Randy Bland layups inside the five-minute mark.
Despite going cold and hitting just one field goal in over four minutes, the Mavs stayed close and Dada's three-pointer from the left side with 17 seconds left closed the gap to 84-82.
Doug Hanson knocked down two free throws to restore the lead to four before Kapels offset those with his layup.
USD shot 56 percent the second half and 55.4 percent for the game and had a trio of 20-point scorers, led by King, who had 25. Paben added 22 and Trofolz 20.
Bland led the Mavs with 20 points and eight rebounds, Ty Graham scored 19 and Dada 18. UNO shot 49.2 percent for the game.
