Montoya, Wolverines Blank UNO

Ann Arbor, Michigan--UNO freshman goaltender had 40 saves Friday night as the Mavericks fell to Michigan 2-0 in game one of the CCHA Playoffs at Yost Ice Arena.
"Our guys did a great job of playing the way we scripted the game plan," UNO head coach Mike Kemp said. "It was disappointing though with the amount of penalties we took. It is a matter of survival from here on out. We will go out and play hard tomorrow for the right to play again Sunday."
UM's David Rohlfs opened up scoring at 12:06 of the first period on the power play to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Rohlfs knocked in a loose puck during a scramble in front of the net. The goal was briefly discussed among the officials because Holt appeared to be interfered with during the play but referee Steve McInchak did not overturn the ruling.
The Wolverines grabbed a 2-0 lead with 4:22 left in the second period on a goal by Dwight Helminen. Holt stopped a shot from the right circle and the rebound bounced into the crease and Helminen tapped it past Holt after losing sight of the puck.
Michigan outshot the Mavs 42-16 in the contest. UM was 1-6 on the power play while the Mavs went 0-5.
UM's Al Montoya had 16 saves in the shutout and earned number one star honors. Montoya had two noteable saves on the night to tame the Maverick offense. The first one came one a breakaway by Scott Parse in the first period and the other on a one-timer by Alex Nikiforuk in the final period.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 6:35 p.m.
