Ann Arbor, Michigan--The UNO hockey team surrendered four Michigan goals in the final 13 minutes to lose 5-2 in game three of the CCHA Playoffs Sunday night.
UNO carried a 2-1 lead into the final period but three UM goals in a span of two and a half minutes became the difference.
The Wolverines struck first at 12:52 of the opening period when Jeff Tambellini scored on a one-timer from the right circle. UNO responded three minutes later on the power play when Alex Nikiforuk scored his sixth goal of the season. Mike Lefley fed Nikiforuk from the right faceoff circle and the pass found its way through the crease and Nikiforuk tapped it in by UM goaltender Al Montoya to knot the score at 1-1.
UNO took a 2-1 lead with 1:31 remaining in the second stanza when Scott Parse knocked home a rebound after Kaleb Betts' slapshot hit off the crossbar and bounced to Parse in the right circle.
The Mavericks took the one-goal lead into the final period but the Wolverines got two goals in less than a minute from Dwight Helminen and Eric Werner at 6:55 and 7:54. Tambellini then recorded his second goal of the night on the power play to give the Wolverines a two-goal cushion with 10:22 remaining in the game.
Helminen ended scoring with an empty net goal with 1:29 left for his second goal of the evening.
UNO goaltender Chris Holt had 30 saves in the game and finished the series stopping 94 of 99 shots in the three-game series.
Andrew Wong became UNO's all-time career assist leader when he recorded a helper on Parse's goal. The senior from Calgary, Alberta finished his Maverick career with 40 goals and 80 assists for 120 points.
The Mavericks ended the season with a 8-26-5 record.
