Mavs Split at Missouri Western

St. Joseph, Mo. - The Mavericks won the first game of a doubleheader 8-1 over Missouri Western and then fell 4-3 in extra innings in the second game Tuesday night. The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for No. 18 UNO (20-4).
The Mavs opened up scoring in the first inning of the opener when Lauren McArthur homered to drive in Sara Sortino. In the fourth inning Kelsey Warning and Katie Novotny drove in runs with singles and in the sixth Nicole Vos drove in two runs with a double. Cheris Kuster struck out eight to earn the win and go to 7-2 in the year.
In the nightcap the Griffons broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double by Amy Beverly off Maverick pitcher Jenny Pritchard. Working in relief, Pritchard gave up two runs and collected her first loss of the year, falling to 8-1.
The Mavs got all their runs in the fifth when Warning grounded in a run and Vos drove in two more with a single.
The Mavericks will head to Nebraska-Kearney for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday then return home to host the UNO Maverick Tournament all day Saturday and Sunday.
