Mavs Win a Pair of Close Ones

Kelsey Warning's home run to lead off the seventh inning was the only run needed as the Mavericks shut out South Dakota 1-0 Tuesday night on the way to a sweep of UNO's North Central Conference opening doubleheader. The Mavs won the second game 2-0 at Claussen-Westgate Field.
In the opener Warning came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and hit the first pitch over the left field fence for her fifth homer of the year. Cheris Kuster pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out ten to improve to 8-2. Warning added a triple and Sara Sortino hit her fourth double of the year.
Shilo Jorgenson highlighted the second game for UNO with two hits, an RBI and a run. She also made the final out of the game by fielding a grounder and stepping on third base, helping pitcher Taren Tuley out of a one-out bases-loaded jam. Tuley struck out 11 and gave up three hits to up her record to 7-1.
Nicole Vos, NCC player of the week last week, hit her second triple of the season.
The Mavs improved to 24-4 and 2-0 in the conference while USD dropped to 12-7 and 0-2. UNO will host North Dakota State Saturday and North Dakota Sunday at Claussen-Westgate with both NCC doubleheaders starting at noon.
