Doubleheader Split Ends Mav Winning Streak

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The fourth-ranked Mavs gave up five fifth-inning runs in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday night to split with South Dakota State and end a 19-game winning streak. UNO, now 39-5, won the opener 5-0 but dropped the second game 5-4. The Mavs are now 9-1 in North Central Conference play and SDSU is 19-26 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
In the first game the Mavs scored when Kelsey Warning and Nicole Vos each singled in runs in the first inning and Lauren McArthur drove in two with a single in the second. In the sixth inning Kelli Lentz grounded in Shilo Jorgensen to end the Mavs' scoring.
Cheris Kuster struck out 11 batters and improved to 15-2 with the win.
In the second game Taren Tuley had another shutout going for the Mavs until the Jackrabbits broke through for five runs in the fifth inning. Ashley Kalina and Bobbie Jo Mitchell had two RBIs each as the Jackrabbits scored all their runs with two outs. Tuley fell to 8-2.
UNO got its four runs off a Katie Novotny double in the second, a two-run homer by Vos in the fourth and an RBI single by Sara Sortino in the fifth. Vos' homer was the 27th of her career, putting her one behind Erin Drinnin for the Maverick record.
The Mavs will look to start another winning streak and hold on to first place in the NCC when they head to St. Cloud State this Saturday and Minnesota State, Mankato this Sunday. Both doubleheaders start at noon.
Notes: The Mavs were ranked first in the NCAA's North Central Region rankings released Wednesday. Truman State was second and St. Cloud State was third. The top team hosts a six-team regional next month.
