Vos Ties Home Run Record in Maverick Sweep

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Nicole Vos tied the UNO career home run record in Game 1 of a doubleheader with St. Cloud State and the fourth-ranked Mavs held on to win the second game and remain in first place in the North Central Conference Saturday afternoon at Selke Field. UNO won the opener 3-2 in 12 innings and took the second game 4-2. The Mavs improved to 41-5 and 11-1 in the NCC, while SCSU went to 25-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
Vos opened scoring in the second inning of the first game with a home run, the tenth of the year and 28th of her career, tying her with Erin Drinnin. The Mavs then added to their lead in the third when Sara Sortino singled in Missy Kelly. The Huskies tied the score in the seventh with a two-run homer by Brooke Gentzler.
The score stayed tied until the top of the 12th when Lauren McArthur singled to lead off and Jenny Pritchard pinch ran for her. After Vos flied out Shilo Jorgensen stepped to the plate and singled in Pritchard for the winning run.
Freshman Cheris Kuster pitched the entire game and recorded a career-high 17 strikeouts to improve to 16-2. With 199 in her first year, she is now just 20 strikeouts from tying the single-season record of 219 by Michelle Manthei and she moved into eighth for the career record.
In the second game the Mavs scored their four runs in the second inning and the Huskies scored their two in the sixth. The Mavs got on the board with singles by Jorgensen, Andrea Lockett, Erin Bluml and Kellyn Kramolisch in the second while SCSU got three walks and two hits to get its runs in the sixth.
Taren Tuley pitched the win for UNO and went to 9-2.
The Mavs will travel to Minnesota State, Mankato for another noon doubleheader Sunday to wrap up NCC play.
