Mavs Sign Transfer Quantel Murphy

University of Nebraska at Omaha coach Kevin McKenna said today that Quantel Murphy has signed a financial aid agreement and will play basketball for the Mavericks next season.
Murphy is a 6-5, 200-pound forward from Denver, who played two seasons at Drake University. He will be a junior next season and will have two seasons of eligibilty at UNO. Last year at Drake he played in 25 games with 10 starts and averaged 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He averaged 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 27 games, with three starts as a redshirt freshman in 2002-03.
He redshirted in 2000-01 for the Bulldogs.
Murphy earned All-Dnever Prep League honors as a senior while averaging 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.2 assists per game for 23-3 George Washington High School, which was the state Class 5A 2001 runner-up. George Washington won three straight league titles as he set the school marks for dunks in a season with 56 and in a career with 89.
Murphy is the second recruit for the Mavericks for 2004-05. Last November, Omaha Burke High School standout Grant Nieland signed a national letter of intent to UNO.
The Mavericks lose three seniors from last year's North Central Conference championship team that finished 22-8 after earning a trip to the NCAA II tournament.
