Mavs Four Points Off Lead After Day One

Abby Wilson opened the North Central Conference women's tennis tournament Friday morning with a three hour singles match. She then went on to defeat her semifinal opponent in less than an hour and become on of four Mavs awaiting finals matches Saturday morning for key points at Hanscom Park Tennis Center. Her wins helped put the University of Nebraska-Omaha in second place with 42 points, four points off leader and defending NCC champ North Dakota.
Joining Wilson in the finals for UNO are Shannon Dinovo, Sarah Huls and Lindsay Henjum. The Mavs will match up with the Fighting Sioux in three of the four finals as they attempt to win their first conference title.
Wilson, playing at No. 5 singles, fell behind to Kelley Severson of St. Cloud State in the opening round after losing the first set 6-4. She then battled back and took the second set 7-5 and won the final set 7-6 (5). In the semifinals she had a much easier time against South Dakota State's Jen Creed, winning 6-2, 6-2. She will face UND's Hana Bloomberg in the final.
No. 2 Sarah Huls defeated Mallory Larsen of Augustana 7-6, 6-5 in the first round and then topped South Dakota's Leah Branaugh 6-1, 6-0 for a second straight trip to the NCC finals. She will face UND's Jeni Mihulka.
Lindsay Henjum made her way into her first final with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Minnesota State's Liz Retlaff at No. 3 and a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jacklyn Engels of USD. She will take on Erica Fredstrom of North Dakota.
Senior Shannon Dinovo will be playing in her second final after defeating MSU's Jamie Koerner 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 and USD's Jenni Flynn. Waiting for Henjum in the finals will be SCSU's Nicole Nyberg.
In No. 1 singles Sara Batchelor made it to the semifinals with a first round win over South Dakota State's Kate Vanderwall but fell to Huskie Berit Merrill. She will play for third place against Augustana's Melanie Feehan.
Maggie Russell, playing at No. 4 singles, fell in the opening round but won in the consolation round to play for fifth place Saturday against MSU's Marilyn Riniker.
The first round of doubles was also played Friday, but the Mavs had byes in all but one of those flights. Wilson and Mikaila Spalding won at No. 3 in the first round 8-1 over SDSU's Creed/Flynn. The two will take on St. Cloud's Lauritsen/Pease in a semifinal Saturday.
Also awaiting semifinal matches are top-seeded Russell and Pam Le at No. 1 and Henjum/Huls at No. 2.
The Mavs will look to overcome UND and take home their first NCC title with action beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. at Hanscom.

St. Cloud State crowned five singles champs Friday and all three doubles teams are awaiting finals matches Saturday to give the Huskies first place after the first day of the NCC men's tennis tournament. SCSU leads with 32 points, MSU follows with 20. SDSU is in third and AC is in fourth.
