Kuster Sets Strikeout Record at MSU Classic

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. - Freshman Cheris Kuster struck out 10 batters Sunday, picked up two victories and set the UNO record for single-season strikeouts at 222. Behind her pitching the third-ranked Mavs defeated Truman State 4-1 in the first game and Winona State 2-1 in the second game of the MSU American Legion Classic. UNO finished the regular season with a 45-7 record.
Kuster started the day by striking out nine Truman State batters. Her seventh strikeout tied her with Michelle Manthei at 219 for the record. Leading at the plate for the Mavericks were Kellyn Kramolisch who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kelsey Warning who hit her eighth home run of the year.
In the second game Kuster (18-4) added just one strikeout to her record total but allowed just one run off seven hits and no walks. Katie Novotny was the difference for the Mavs, driving in Andrea Lockett for the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Lauren McArthur went 2-for-3.
Missouri Western finished the 16 team MSU Classic in first with a 4-0 record. The Mavs finished fifth at 3-1. Truman, ranked first in the NCAA's latest North Central Region ranking, went 3-2 in the tournament.
The Mavs, second in the region, will spend their third straight weekend in Minnesota when they head to St. Cloud for the North Central Conference tournament Friday and Saturday.
