Mavs Earn Sweep Over No. 10 Bison
Apr 3, 2004 | Softball
Kelsey Warning's three-run home run in the first inning led the Mavs to a 4-0 win over No. 10 North Dakota State and a sweep in the North Central Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Claussen-Westgate field. The Mavs, ranked fifth in the nation, defeated NDSU 4-1 in the second game to improve to 26-4.
In the opener Kellyn Kramolisch struck out to lead off the first inning but advanced on a wild pitch, one of four for the Bison in the two games. Sara Sortino then singled and Warning followed with her team-leading sixth home run to give the Mavs the early cushion. Coming into the day, NDSU (17-5) had only allowed five runs in the first inning.
The Mavs added some insurance in the sixth when Kramolisch scored on a Lauren McArthur double.
Freshman Cheris Kuster struck out 13 batters and moved into a tie for ninth in the single-season strikeout record just 30 games into the season. She gave up just two hits and two walks, lowering her ERA to 1.12 and improving to 9-2 on the year.
In the second game the Mavs opened up the scoring in the third when Sortino drove in Kramolisch on a single. In the fourth Andrea Lockett advanced on a passed ball before Bison pitcher Courtney Lacock got out of a bases-loaded jam. The Mavericks put in the last two runs in a hitless sixth inning when two different NDSU right fielders made errors.
Jenny Pritchard struck out ten and earned the win (10-1) after giving up five hits, including an RBI double in the fifth to Lacock. Kuster pitched one and a third innings of relief to pick up her first save of the year.
The Mavs will continue NCC play with a doubleheader Sunday against North Dakota. First pitch at Claussen-Westgate is at noon.
